Gossip Sites

A student mentioned a gossip website to me, and being curious, I checked it out. As I was checking the website, several other students also admitted they went to the same site for gossip. One admitted to being a 'tabloid whore' although I suspect other people would stand up and say their name and admit they are also 'tabloid whores'. We all are, in a way. Voyeurs into the lives of other people, which is in a way, what gossip sites are all about.

I did not like the site I went to - the writer, I believe is emotionally stuck at 2 1/2 - 4 1/2 years old - back when children are focused on things that are icky icky or poo poo. Furthermore, I found the writer to be stuck like glue on the idea of sex - everything to that person was sex - whether in the photos, and the blog writers comments about the person, or simply their fixation on weight and celebrities who are overweight or in the alternative - underweight. One example was a photo of a male: "We heart the dick Thicke!" - DICK has strikethrough, but it is clear the intent.

I scrolled through about 20 pages and found references to sex, sex acts, or an ideal of sex - yum yum, on at least one image per page. Fixated on sex and emotionally crippled - I would immediately question - who was it that abused or otherwise sexually used this person when they were young and given their emotional age, I would guess they were hurt somewhere between the ages of 4-10 years of age. Something very traumatic occurred that has defined this person and locked them into this obsession of sex and behavior that is at the very least - childish.

Now take a person with a fixation on weight, sex, and emotionally crippled terminology and have them gossip about celebrities. This person craves attention, perhaps to compensate for the abuse they suffered in silence - they want to be something important rather than the weak pathetic little child who was stuck in icky icky poo poo land.

The question is not reading about what celebrities do - but why. If the individual goes out driving drunk with their child on the seat next to them - THAT is news, whether celebrity or not. If the person is seeing someone - THAT is not your business. If the person is seeing a lawyer about a divorce -THAT is not our business. If the person hits their child - the news of the hitting, IS our business, BUT everything else is not.

I do understand the interest in the lives of people with great wealth, and looks only 1% of the population could possibly have - we always want what we do not have, and why not want something only the rich and powerful possess. Why not. Why not take their problems also - financial issues and dysfunctional families. They are no different, just wealthier and more famous.

I have confessed to having had an interest until 1997, and I repented for my past sins, for having been a tabloid whore.

Sidebar:
In thinking about dates I remember - two stand out. When I stopped eating a certain food - 1994; and when I stopped participating in the gossip/celebrity world - 1997. I have a couple other dates I remember, but these two oddly enough I remember vividly.

Why do we need to know, why should we, what right do we have? And the answer is the same - we don't. I admit to having peeked a few times since 97, but one can count it on one hand, maybe starting the 2nd hand, and for the most part those occasions revolved around Britney and her car-crash of a life (at the time). Once more recently I read a story about someone named Peaches, who I do not know and do not care much about, although the person she was married to was part of a group I do happen to appreciate a bit. I admit, I am defending the few occasions and explaining why I visited as many times as I have - have I fallen off the wagon? I sure hope not.

We, the public do not need to know ANYTHING about a celebrities private life. We don't and I find it odd we want to. Why not stand on your balcony and watch your neighbors have sex. Maybe you would do that also, but many people who read tabloid trash would think of themselves as better than watching their neighbors have sex - even if the sex was much more interesting than your own. The truth is, there is no difference.

Celebrities come in different packages: actors, make films or television programs. We like the program, we like the actor. When he or she comes out of his/her home and goes to work, we have an investment in their actions. We have an investment (social) in their behavior while driving, but we do not have any investment or right to spy on their private life or private behavior. We don't and nothing can justify said action. It is not a matter of saying - it comes with the job. IT DOESN'T. imagine you sitting on the beach and some guy standing 30 feet away staring at you, watching you with your spouse and your two children, and for five hours does nothing but stare at you and your family, pausing long enough to go on a cell phone, speaking to someone while staring at you. How would you feel? For yourself, for your children? Sure celebrities could hire a bodyguard, BUT why should they. The entire logic used by people with gossip sites is twisted - they should be used to it, that is the nature of their business, they can hire a bodyguard ... NOOOOOOOOOO. It is not the nature, it is what we have created. It is not something one gets used to - unlike the icky icky poo poo gossip pimp who desires notoriety more than they desire knowledge or humanity. It is also funny to read a few of their ads or causes - as if throwing in a feed the children cause, between all the sex and gossip, makes everything good.

Leave the actor, singer, sports guy alone. Who cares if he models underwear or sits at the pool and turns into a bronze god ... we have seen recently how a person from no where in particular can become the single most famous female on earth for the moment - Susan Boyle. There are scores of other people who can model underwear or lounge at the pool - the fixation is the issue. And I believe it stems back to his mental level of 2.5 - 5, where oral, sex, and toilet fixations were common (and by sex I do not mean sex in the act, but rather the seeming obsessive interest in genitalia).

Leave them alone. if they drive drunk, we have a right to follow their court hearings. If they are arrested for drugs - we can read the report and watch the hearings. If they get divorced, we can read about the fact they got divorced, but we do not have a right to know why. If they are dating an actress or an actor and they are covert about said dating - we have no right. If they prance down the street with the person next to them, fine, we can read about it - but we do not have a right to go beyond the simple detail of who was with whom. And when they hide their children from the media - why the fuck not. You don't have any fucking right to see their child at any time. Placing myself in any of their places, I would have no problem smashing the camera and the face of someone who came too close to my child. I would do it as many times as it took to get the message and if it required my going to jail - fine. At some point, on some level, the paparazzi members would decide they value their camera and their nose, their face, and their teeth more than a photo - EVEN if when they sue me, I pay for it all, it is the inconvenience they would suffer and at some point they would stay away. You simply do not have a right.

When we finally understand all this, we may well find ourselves emotionally and mentally better adjusted. Leave these icky icky poo poo heads to dwell in their own feces and the rest of us can grow up, and have a mature relationship with people - whether they happen to be celebrities (as defined by anyone who of their own choosing or otherwise in whatever field is placed into the public eye) or just your neighbors. Like your neighbors, they are people who want to raise their children or live their lives without having a fucking camera in their yard, face, car every time they turn around - and they deserve the same protections - LEAVE THEM ALONE. Stop buying the rubbish at the grocery stands, spend money to see their films if they are any good, don't spend money if the film is crap, and get over the rest of it. Please. Icky Icky Poo Poo head needs to be retired - and that is something we can all pitch in and do - send that terrified little child back to where they deserve - ignominy.
