Merkel slammed for joy over bin Laden killing

Several German politicians on Wednesday criticized Chancellor Angela Merkel for expressing joy over the death of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, saying it sent the wrong message.

Katrin Göring-Eckardt, Green party MP, Bundestag vice president and leading member of the Evangelical Church of Germany, told the Berliner Zeitung she was glad bin Laden was no longer leading a terrorist group. “But you can’t be happy about his death,” she said.

On Monday, Merkel told reporters that bin Laden’s death at the hands of US forces was “good news.”

“I’m glad that killing bin Laden was successful,” she said.

The criticism of Merkel's comments is coming not only from political opposition, but from her own party, echoing discomfort expressed by some observers at the emotional, celebratory reaction of many Americans and foreign politicians around the world after bin Laden’s killing.

Siegfried Kauder, a member of Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), slammed her remarks, calling them reminiscent of something a person would say in the “middle ages.”

“I would not have formulated them like this,” he said to the Passauer Neuen Presse, expressing doubts that killing bin Laden was even legal under international law.

Other politicians said they would have preferred to see bin Laden arrested.

Martin Lohmann, in charge of the CDU’s Working Group of Engaged Catholics, said killing anyone, even a terrorist, “can never be cause for joy for a Christian.”

“It would have been better if Osama bin Laden had been arrested and brought to justice,” he added.

Despite the criticism, most German political figures said they were relieved bin Laden would no longer be stirring up trouble.

Meanwhile, German’s BND intelligence chief Ernst Uhrlau said bin Laden’s death didn’t necessarily mean an improvement in the nation's security.

“The security forces must remain very vigilant,” he told the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper, though he described the US operation as a success.

Uhrlau emphasized that bin Laden no longer had a day-to-day role in planning terrorist operations, but he acknowledged the man’s power as a “role model” and said terrorists would not easily be able to fill the gap bin Laden’s death leaves.

'Contraception cheapest way to combat climate change'

Contraception is almost five times cheaper as a means of preventing climate change than conventional green technologies, according to research by the London School of Economics.

Every £4 spent on family planning over the next four decades would reduce global CO2 emissions by more than a ton, whereas a minimum of £19 would have to be spent on low-carbon technologies to achieve the same result, the research says.

The report, Fewer Emitter, Lower Emissions, Less Cost, concludes that family planning should be seen as one of the primary methods of emissions reduction. The UN estimates that 40 per cent of all pregnancies worldwide are unintended.

If these basic family planning needs were met, 34 gigatons (billion tonnes) of CO2 would be saved – equivalent to nearly 6 times the annual emissions of the US and almost 60 times the UK’s annual total.

Roger Martin, chairman of the Optimum Population Trust at the LSE, said: “It’s always been obviously that total emissions depend on the number of emitters as well as their individual emissions – the carbon tonnage can’t shoot down as we want, while the population keeps shooting up.”

UN data suggests that meeting unmet need for family planning would reduce unintended births by 72 per cent, reducing projected world population in 2050 by half a billion to 8.64 million.
The research is published on the day that the Government’s climate change advisers, the Climate Change Committee, warned households and industry that a planned 80 per cent reduction in emissions are likely to prove insufficient.

I had dinner with someone tonight who told me about a class they were taking with a professor who was, as they described him - great, fantastic, brilliant, and wonderful - I was waiting for the person to bring out his crown. He teaches an anti-American class, Marxist in his interpretation of historical events and actions [my analysis based upon what he requires in reading and what I have culled from this person and several others who were his unwitting victims].

Summary of his teaching/argument:

Poor Osama, we declared war on him and he was defending himself because he had no other way to respond, and it was all our fault, and we trained him so we got all that blowback and its all our fault and we deserve to be punished for all the bad things we do/did to them.

When I made a derogatory comment about the instructors usefulness to humanity and what should be done to him [a boot and his ass] - I was told I was 'closed minded'.

If you ever want to push every wrong button - proceed down that road, because it is a sure fire way to get erased. I wish I could introduce him to bin Laden, to watch as his head was cut off his body and carried about like a trophy. All the while he would have protested how he was really supporting bin Laden and respected him.

As for the person who I had dinner with - well, the dustbin awaits.

I cannot tolerate ignorance that exceeds that of a two year old. No matter who they are, we cannot waste time on people and things that consume energy.

There are moments I wish bin Laden prevailed, just so he could cull the population, and I know that among the first would be all those who spew forth the rubbish as presented above from the person in the class or their instructor.

Someone might say - what makes me so sure I am right, maybe they are, and maybe I am closed minded. I have spent over eight years evaluating every possible answer to that issue. I have looked at it from every side, and then found nuances that required evaluating. I have spent more time dealing with that single question than this person has spent on their entire education, and quite likely more time than the instructor has on any given subject. I started the analysis with my believing the Evil One and his cohorts were Robin Hood against the evil Sheriff. I started where the idiotic instructor now stands. I began with that premise and believed it from 1995 until 2001, longer than the instructor has taught any of his courses on the subject. Six years of believing, and not just believing but being able to argue every defense of the Evil One, and fully supporting him. Until 2001. Blowing up a military base or ship or ... was, for me, acceptable as long as it did not turn on civilian lives being lost.

I have considered that instructors arguments, long before he even knew he was making them, and I reject them.

Those who teach those lies are more dangerous than bin laden, for he has told us he wants to destroy us while they pretend to be one of us. He wants to change us - they claim to want to educate us. Bin Laden is honest in his purpose and goals, the purveyors of the lies are not.

In that way, I suppose, I still prefer bin laden - I know what he is, and what he wants. Instructors who teach Marxist theory, and take pieces of truth and wrap it in crap and sell it to students as the gospel of anti-Western thought ... they are a more serious threat.

Liberal actress says tea parties were racist

Liberal actress and political activist Janeane Garofalo, in all seriousness, said activists who attended tea parties are racists with dysfunctional brains in a recent prime-time television appearance.

"Let's be very honest about what this is about. This is not about bashing Democrats. It's not about taxes. They have no idea what the Boston Tea party was about. They don't know their history at all. It's about hating a black man in the White House," she said on MSNBC's "The Countdown" with Keith Olbermann Thursday evening. "This is racism straight up and is nothing but a bunch of teabagging rednecks. There is no way around that."

Olbermann did not once try to challenge her on those assertions.

The actress went on to describe the brain size of typical "right-winger, Republican or conservative or your average white power activist."

"Their synapses are misfiring. ... It is a neurological problem we are dealing with," she said. This isn't the first time she's offered this analysis, either. Ms. Garofalo said similar things about Alaskan GOP Governor Sarah Palin's brain last February in an interview with an environmental blog.

The actress went on to bash the GOP on MSNBC Thursday because it had "crystallized into the white power movement" as well as Fox News, which she said has captured the "Klan demo [graphic]."

"Who else is Fox talking to? Urban older white guys and their girlfriends who suffer from Stockholm Syndrome," she said.

Ironically, Ms. Garofalo is currently playing a role on the drama 24, which is aired by the Fox Broadcasting Company and is popular among conservative circles.

Kremlin dusts off Cold War lexicon to make US villain in Georgia

Russians were told over breakfast yesterday what really happened in Georgia: the conflict in South Ossetia was part of a plot by Dick Cheney, the Vice-President, to stop Barak Obama being elected president of the United States.

The line came on the main news of Vesti FM, a state radio station that — like the Government and much of Russia's media — has reverted to the old habits of Soviet years, in which a sinister American hand was held to lie behind every conflict, especially those embarrassing to Moscow.

Modern Russia may be plugged into the internet and the global marketplace but in the battle for world opinion the Kremlin is replaying the old black-and-white movie.

The Obama angle is getting wide play. It was aired on Wednesday by Sergei Markov, a senior political scientist who is close to Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister and power behind President Medvedev.

“George Bush's Administration is promoting interests of candidate John McCain,” said Dr Markov. “Defeated by Barak Obama on all fronts, McCain has one last card to play yet - the creation of a virtual Cold War with Russia . . . Bush himself did not want a war in South Ossetia but his Republican Party did not leave him any choice.” The Americans were now engineering an armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Dr Markov added.

The Establishment and its media supporters are dusting off favourites from the Cold War shelf. Sergei Lavrov, the Foreign Minister, accused Washington of playing dangerous games. The West was guilty of “adventurism”, supporting aggression against peace-loving Russian forces who are engaged on a humanitarian mission to protect human life. Yesterday's headline in Commersant, a generally admired newspaper, announced with old-style sarcasm the imminent American “Military Humanitarian Landing” in Georgia.

A classic of Soviet-speak also came from Vasili Lickhachev, a former Russian Ambassador to the EU. “The West has spent a lot of time, energy and money to teach Georgia the tricks of the trade . . . to make the country look like a democracy,” he said.

“We and many other nations see through this deceit. We understand that the seditious tactics of the so-called colour revolutions are a real threat to international law and the source of global legal nihilism.”

These grooves from the Cold War grave are shrugged off by many Russians but they strike a chord in a nation ready once again to see itself as the victim of outside conspiracy. Blogs everywhere attract conspiracy lovers but Russian blogs have been exceptionally rich this week in theories of Western skulduggery over Georgia.

The old thinking finds more fertile ground now because, in the view of disillusioned Russians, President Bush relaunched the ideological war through a compliant American media, especially at the time of the invasion of Iraq.

“In the old days under Soviet rule we didn't believe a word of our own propaganda but we thought that information was free in the West and we longed for it,” said Katya, a middle-aged Muscovite. “But we have learnt since that the West has its own propaganda and in some ways it is more powerful because people believe it.”

Moscow is using novel methods to spread a very unsubtle, Cold War version of the Caucasian conflict to the world. Chief among them is Russia Today, a state 24-hour news channel that is fronted much of the time by cheery British and other English-speaking television professionals.

The smiles and studio banter could come from BBC World or CNN but the story is unrelentingly the Kremlin version. Banners flash along at the bottom of the screen saying such things as “genocide” and “aggression” or “city turns into human hell, many people still trapped under rubble”. Recapping the conflict yesterday RT's presenter said that Georgia's “brutal assault” had killed 1,600 civilians in its breakaway province in a campaign that destroyed 70 per cent of the buildings in Tskhinvali, its capital. Russian forces had moved in only to bring peace as Georgian forces killed women and children who were trying to flee, it said. Throughout its rolling cover of alleged Georgian atrocities, there was no mention of the heavy Russian military offensive.

The coverage goes down well in developing countries that want an alternative to CNN and BBC World Service, a Russian official said. “We have learnt from Western TV how to simplify the narrative.”

Should opinions matter? Should they, deep down, matter what other people think or say about us. If we believe in ourselves, if we know that we are a good person, kind, caring, compassionate, reasonably bright, interested, funny ... should it matter what other people think. We have friends, a job, maybe a family, even a dog or cat - should it matter what people think.

We all have a need to be accepted. So long recognized that the psychology for this probably goes back to 10,000 BC. Publicly we tell anyone who will listen that we are not interested and do not care what others think of us. When you give advice to your siblings or friends, you tell them not to care what other people think. Do what is right and ignore the noise on the sidelines. When kids tell you that they are pressured to do W, X, Y, or Z, we tell them not to care what people say about us - to be strong.

Why then do we take all that reasonable and wise instruction and throw it out the window when it becomes: The world's opinion of the US.

Why?

Why does it matter what the world thinks, but not what people who live less than a mile from you think - people that will be within your life for your life, or could be - but people in foreign countries, many who only understand the United States from movies, and or from what their governments tell them they need to know - why do they matter more.

Anytime you want to criticize a president - use all the ammunition you can find. if the world likes him - ignore the world. If they hate him - suddenly it is an imperative we change presidents to restore America's image in the eyes of the world.

Political.

Everything seems to be political. Therefore, nothing is of much use as far as wisdom is concerned - just political wisdom, not real wisdom for the ages.

Pessimism about the future of Iraq has deepened over the past two years, and most people surveyed want the United States and NATO to withdraw their troops from Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the survey confirmed, people worldwide acknowledge the ascendancy of China. Many people - including 3 out of 10 Americans - think that China will eventually replace the United States as the world's leading superpower, although no timeframe was specified.

But people are also critical of China, according to the poll, which was conducted shortly after civil unrest broke out in Tibet this spring. Overall favorableness ratings have slipped over the past year; China is seen by many as ignoring the interests of other countries and is faulted for its record on the environment and human rights.

Perhaps the world expected the US to blow off steam, a certain amount was permitted (blowing up crap) as long as we went home afterward - but we didn't, and that irritated the world. Perhaps that is a big chunk of the cause, followed by our media exploitations of every foible and mistake, criminal action, and legitimate acts. The millions of followers of the extremist views of bin Laden do not have their own media - they use ours (and a couple newer ones in the ME). What they know, they know in large part from us, they hear our news, read our editorials, watch the news programs criticizing Bush - and they regurgitate it when it suits them. They are not creative. They attacked the WTC in 1993 and again 8 years later.

So why do we care what the world thinks. I can name eight countries where human slavery is rampant - where children are sold, where women turned into sex slaves. I can name twelve countries where honor killings occur, every day or nearly every day. I can name two countries where the value of life is minimal - they value the unit, the collective, not the individual and the loss of lives is of less interest policy wise than is the loss of a plane or truck, which would be far more valuable.

So why do we care.

Why do we care what the world thinks and why the hell should we be apologizing for anything.

To be honest, I am looking for an apology from the world -that I have to watch on TV as people in whatever country starve to death because the government wants their land or water or oil, and denies it is killing them as the world nods its head in agreement. I am tired of looking at pages of stats on the numbers of children kidnapped from Europe and taken to North Africa to be sold into slavery, as the world stands by and nods silently in agreement. I am tired of watching as governments pretend they are doing peaceful nuclear and we all know they are making bombs - and the world stands by watching and nodding. I am sick and tired of the mindless fools who shit themselves over global warming yet watch and nod in agreement as a million are butchered in some African country, or tens of thousands are imprisoned in some Asian country. I want an apology from them, after which we can consider apologizing to the world for whatever they feel slighted over.

Perhaps it was little more than jealousy and envy that turned them away from the US. The majority, while not liking the US government, all want to live here. perhaps it is something as simple as caring what other people think because they will get jealous if they see you are living well, free of disease, ample food, traveling, movies, shopping - all without a care in the world. Perhaps the poll taken implies this when they state that what pushed the world away is American exceptionalism--our individualism and our go-it-alone attitude. And it doesn't help that Americans' pervasive religiosity and deep patriotism are often exaggerated by America's critics.

I don't care what they think and it has nothing to do with believing we don't live in the same world and need trade and exchange - they need what we have and we will buy what they have. How they feel about us is immaterial.

Negotiation and Voting - Best Example Why It is Naive and Dangerous

There are many Obamessiah followers who support him because he wants to talk, not fight. With Obama, you would get someone who would listen and discuss rather than someone who will war and kill.

The problem is, discussion is not always up to you and sometimes, silly rabbit, in your naivete, you place millions at risk and you do not have that right.

So voting for Obama isn't because you believe negotiation is always best, it isn't and this example shows how it isn't up to you. Voting for him is not because he has experience - he only has a few years more than you or I. It isn't because you want him to stop spending trillions of dollars and increasing the debt - because a .7% tax on our GDP to erase world poverty would surely increase the debt especially with the increase of trillions in federal spending for health care. It can't be because he wants to save the environment, for in his haste to save the environment he will starve the poor at home and abroad (and not because we do not produce enough, but because the poor will not be able to afford to eat).

Just so we are clear - not because of experience, not because he will cut the debt, not because negotiation under all conditions. I am quickly running out of rational reasons.

In the end you will say - just because, or because he isn't Bush. Think about that and what you just said - you told me it doesn't need logic or reason, you acted purely on emotion, driven by gut feeling and passion. You are also probably quite harsh on people who embrace their Bibles or believe Jesus is the greatest philosopher for those nuts on the right, driven by ........... ? Coalition forces captured him in the Tora Bora region - believed to be the hideout of Osama bin Laden - designated him an "enemy combatant" and shipped him out to the US prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

There he remained until Nov. 3, 2005 - when, despite substantial evidence of his terrorist ties and a history of aggressive behavior at Gitmo, he was sent back to Kuwait.

Innocent people held unjustly, and with the weight of lawyers and the ACLU - with the legal system behind him, Abdullah was released. All a misunderstanding his lawyers had said. He was not fighting, just on his way to see family and friends and caught up, fearful and stuck in a hell hole.

He was freed and went back to Kuwait, then in to Syria, and secreted into Iraq where he blew himself up and killed seven innocent people.

He is finally being held to account for the crimes he committed and the innocents he killed, that is one of those things about Islam and Christinaity you can't escape - judgment, BUT the lawyers and friends who pushed for his release are also guilty of the crimes he committed, for they were warned, but in their haste to free the unjustly accused from the evil US, they ignored evidence and he murdered seven people.

The entire legal process was a farce, and the lawyers and judges who freed him are responsible for the lives of all seven people murdered. They have to answer to a higher judge, and I don't believe He will be interested in excuses word games excuses.

Clinton, Robert Kennedy, and Keith Olbermann

MSNBC has seen its rating hit the floor and then we have watched as they began digging a hole for future ratings. The numbers prove this point. The question is why does no one watch MSNBC? The answer is in part their journalistic standards, or lack of. They have become a joke. No one takes them seriously and with the exception of Couric on another channel, fares worse, MSNBC as a whole is in the negative. If you exclude those people employed by MSNBC, NBC - you have about a dozen other people across the country who watch.

None of that is the issue, exactly, but indirectly - Keith Olbermann made outrageous and slanderous comments about Bush several days ago. Every malicious innuendo he could pull out of the gutter he did. Every lie, every piece of hate - Olbermann dug it up and threw it at the screen in his attack on Bush. The hate spewing, viscerally obnoxious Olbermann has no problem attacking Bush professionally and personally.

Hillary Clinton was being interviewed and made a statement - her husband and Robert Kennedy were still slugging it out in June, yet some people want her to quit. Kennedy was well on his way to winning the nomination and cinched or nearly so in June, when he was murdered. That is what she meant. Olbermann - did you intend to imply Bush was a killer, a thief, incompetent, and a liar? Perhaps she could have rephrased the statement, just as you should strongly consider doing before you ever open your mouth again and lose another five viewers.

Yet Hillary did make the statement and Olbermann went after her with the same viciousness (or very nearly so) as he did Bush.

His behavior is not acceptable. The hatred and slander he spews in his monologues - exactly what he claims Hillary is appealing to in the video clips - he is likewise appealing to hate and division. Whack jobs do not need an incentive Olbermann, Hinckley didn't need your vitrol to go forward with his attempt. The crazy people act on their own worldly understanding and we cannot reach that world - and Hillary even less likely, although your rant may well be more likely to get through for it is the same madness part of our brain function you use when you spray your hate through the screen.

I do not like Hillary, but listening to her interview in full, leads the listener to understand with some appreciation, all the work she has done. You were correct - she could suspend her campaign, but that is not her point you stupid fool. Unfortunately your brain does not grapple well with complicated thoughts ... consequently you are very attracted to Obama, and defensive of him, for you both share a limited skill set.

Olbermann, my greatest wish - your program is cancelled and you are removed from the television until after you have had time to recuperate. You need a warm, safe place where you can spend time, take some meds, and recuperate.

Michael Moore - Dipshit

The world does not respect America because we hug them, does not respect the United States because we negotiate. The world, contrary to the infantile imaginings of Moore and a host of other delusional would-be screw-ups, does not hate the US, the world does respect the US and many fear the US, but what else can you expect from a generation that left the church because the idea of 'fearing' God was not inclusive and not reflective of the loving attitude of the late 1960s. Fear was bad. Whether in church (so they abandoned it and chose the Secular Church of hugs and kisses) or in international policy - fear was bad and anyone who suggested otherwise was to be mocked and ridiculed (first amendment).

This Moore 'documentary' will be yet another pack of lies covered up with chocolate crap to make it appear official to the mindless idiots who will go and watch it. Amazing that the left says these things about those who support Bush or the war ... when in actuality, there is more individual thought / disagreement / debate on the right than on the left where everyone is lock-step and mindlessly running full-speed over the falls, all the while championing their right to free speech and academic freedom.

While I do not agree with 20-30% of what Bush has proposed - and I mean the 20-30% are very nearly deal-breakers - he is an honorable man. Moore and Stone are two loathsome despicable spit wads.

On September 6, 2007, Israeli war planes attacked and destroyed a site in Syria. The Israelis never said what they did nor whether they did anything. The Syrians denied anyone did anything and if the Israelis had tried to attack anything they were repelled with superior power on the Syrian side.

Well, sort of ... the US has just released secret intelligence data on the nuclear site that had been destroyed. The response of the IAEA - not to be upset with Syria, but rather with the US for not releasing the information sooner and with Israel for not allowing the IAEA time to inspect.

Dr. ElBaradei said “the unilateral use of force by Israel” undermined “the due process of verification that is at the heart of the nonproliferation regime.” He also said the American allegations against Syria would be investigated with due vigor.

They would actively investigate - just like they did in North Korea, until they got the bomb. Just like Iran.

The IAEA is neither qualified nor competent to investigate anything. One would not wish to tell the IAEA anything, lest the government in question learn of possible actions against their nuclear sites.

Brigitte Bardot - Animal Lover, Sex Symbol, and Hater

Brigitte Bardot is on trial in France for "inciting racial hatred." This is the fifth time she has been sentenced for this crime. Why? Over remarks she made that the Muslim community was "destroying our country and imposing its acts." Reuters, 4/15/08

In France, it is against the law to speak out against any religion (unless it is against Christians) - the sentence will be tougher this time. The prosecutor has said she is tired of prosecuting Bardot and wants a tougher sentence. $23,000 plus several months sentence (suspended).
