Back to Bill Clinton: 1998

December 1998, a month that should, for Bill Clinton, bring back horrible memories. And the start of s serious decline in political values. Historians are often asked to compare how horrible times are today, as if things were better in the 1800s (all one need do is review the newspaper editorials written by FOJs (Friends of Jefferson) about John Adams to see that the political climate is not terribly worse - just different. I would however place the marker at 1998 - the beginning of an even more serious decline in the US values/culture - political separateness is even more prominent today than it was five years ago and I would suggest and I am quite certain the books and theories will follow and agree - it began with the hatred and division over the impeachment of Bill Clinton.

It was the month he was impeached, but did remain in office due to a Senate vote that opposed his removal.

A few statements by 9-10 Democrats might be useful, to jog our memory and help us with some deeper understanding of their character. I am not certain if all 10 are still in the Congress, but several are. Their statements are worth noting today. That is the interesting point about the Internet, television, transcripts, and video recordings - we have them forever, even if the following members of Congress might wish otherwise.

In regard to the impeachment of Bill Clinton -

1) John Conyers, Dem MI stated: it was a republican coup d'etat, and that by doing so would sacrifice our national security and decapitate the Commander in Chief when at war abroad.

Funny from a man who called for impeachment hearings against Bush.

He went on to inform the American people that permanent damage would be done to the Constitution, the Presidency, the nation, and ourselves.

2) John Dingell, Dem Michigan stated: the process was unfair, the minority were not regarded by the majority (political party). This is funny given the treatment of the Republicans for the last three years. Democrats have a great sense of humor.

3)Bill Hefner, Dem, NC stated that in 24 years in the House the venom was greater than at any time. Interesting - I wonder what he thought during the 8 years of the Bush administration. Hefner stated he spoke to Bill twice after the president gave his speech apologizing to the nation (which really wasn't an apology) and according to Hefner, Bill was contrite! I am curious what he claims Bill is contrite about - lying, violating the Constitution, or the act that started it all. It cannot be the act with Lewinsky - for Bill has been 'making friends' around the world for the last nine years - the lists are legion. He may have been sorry he was caught not that he committed the acts he was impeached for.

4) Steny Hoyer, Dem, MD stated that the action by the Republicans was akin to that of Pontius Pilot. IMAGINE - Christ re-crucified. Democracy will be threatened according to Hoyer.

5) Jeerold Nadler, Dem from NY stated a lot of hot air, but in particular - that scholars overwhelmingly agreed it was un-Constitutional to impeach Clinton. Imagine, scholars not agreeing. I guess that immediately determines the Constitutionality Mr. Nadler - what academics think. Further, Mr. Nadler went on to enlighten us with the following words of wisdom - impeachment would overturn the popular will of the people, that it was a coup d'etat by the Republicans. Give me a few minutes on the floor laughing. I don't know what district but I can only wonder whether everyone in his district is as retarded as he seems to be.

6) Sheila Jackson Lee, Dem TX - a real pain: she got up to speak about the impeachment and thanked the troops fighting for our liberty. I only wonder whether any time during the 5 years of Iraq, she did the same thing. I assume she must have. She claimed the impeachment was the Republicans recklessly attempting an attack on the framer's intent, with a president toppled against the people's will. The people's will is important to Ms. Lee and the other Democrats ... the will of the people today is - NO GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE.

7) Maxine Waters, Dem from Los Angeles questioned in her usual bluster and mumbling - how do our soldiers feel while their Commander in Chief is under attack!! brilliant. She was in favor of impeachment hearings against Bush DURING TWO REAL WARS. I love consistency and humor. It was, according to Maxine - a Republican coup d'etat led by right-wing Christian extremists!!

8) Edward Markey, Dem from MA stated that it was a Constitutional coup d'etat and consequently we have become a laughing stock of the world. No Mr. Markey, what this process showed is we work, our system functions, we do not collapse, we do not fall apart - our system is resilient regardless of the incompetency or immorality of the president.

9) Albert Wynn, Dem from MD told us that the impeachment was a parliamentary coup d'etat.

and our final candidate,

10) Robert Wexler from Florida, also a Dem. The impeachment would reverberate for centuries. If he means by this the quid pro quo and attacks by Democrats upon anything Republican - we'll see, but it certainly places their attacks into the correct light! Our enemies would be happy, according to Mr. Wexler, if the president is impeached. Interesting also, given his support for hearings on impeachment against Bush. I can only wonder about the real enemies who would have delighted in that process - you know, the enemies who blew up the World Trade Center, waged war against the US in Iraq, and in Afghanistan, not to mention the attacks in Bali, London, and Spain. They would all be quite happy, but that didn't stop Wexler.

And these people are paid by us to lead - they are dumber than a tree and about as eloquent as they claimed Bush was, or less - he spoke from his heart and meant every word he said. It is doubtful these fools understand what it is they spewed forth that day in December 1998.
