Obama delivers snub to Clinton
BARACK Obama has given his clearest signal that Hillary Clinton will not be on the Democrat ticket for November’s US election by appointing her sacked campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle as chief of staff to the sofar unnamed vice-presidential nominee.
The appointment — the first major defection from Hillaryland — came as former vicepresident and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore finally endorsed Senator Obama as the Democrat nominee.
Mr Gore, the last of the Democrat ‘‘ big fish’’ to officially back Senator Obama, said Americans had not been so inspired by a political leader since the days of John F. Kennedy.
Speaking to a crowd of 20,000 at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on the anniversary of his presidential candidacy announcement in 1999, Mr Gore said the administration of George W. Bush represented ‘‘ eight years of incompetence, neglect and failure’’.
Most important for Senator Obama was Mr Gore’s decision to urge his vast network of green supporters to contribute to the Democrat campaign.
Ms Solis Doyle, a close friend of Senator Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod, was dumped by the Clinton campaign after the Super Tuesday primary day on February 5. She and Senator Clinton reportedly have not spoken since.
Ms Solis Doyle was blamed — some say made the scapegoat — for Senator Clinton’s bad start in Iowa and for mismanaging the campaign’s finances.
A Clinton insider quoted by CBS said that the hiring of Ms Solis Doyle was Senator Obama’s way of sending an ‘‘ F-you’’ to Senator Clinton.
