Bye Bye Hillary

I was wrong. I really believed she would pull something off to topple Obama from his precarious perch. She had so much to lose, and the Clintons do not take losing very well. Not that anyone does, but these two are plotters, and they come back like a tour de force.

So Hillary conceded and said, according to the Independent headline:

Clinton: 'I ask you to work as hard for Obama as you have for me'

Sidebar:
I do try to read the English papers - Indepndent, Guardian, Times, especially on Sunday. This Sunday, either AIDS or Obama and or Clinton covered most of the major headlines or front pages.
End Side bar

The headline - Clinton asks people to work as hard for Obama as they did for her.

Why do we pretend?

She is 60, will be 61 in another several months. If Obama wins in November, he will be in office two terms. She can't go against him after one term - that would be sacriligious.

The next occasion would be 2016, putting Hillary at 69 years of age, pushing 70.

Electing a 60 year old woman is one thing, electing a 70 year old woman is another issue entirely.
We can elect 70 year old men, but not 70 year old women. She knows this. In fact, pretty sure this discussion ran through the discussions in the campaign in the last four months.

She knows this is the end.

She also knows, and Obama has told her, she will not be the VP. He cannot have someone who, everytime she does something, would upstage him. His message of change would get caught up in the Bill and Hillary saga. Everytime Bill steps off the page, a girlfriend is discovered, his financial schemes are opened up for inspection, the library lists are discovered ... Obama and his message will be the losers, and OBAMA IS SMART enough to know he cannot take that baggage on this trip.

She may have believed she could get it, perhaps, but I think she was shrewd enough to know she couldn't. She could pose as a messenger for the administration - send Bill to the UN maybe, he has wanted that slot for a long time, make Bill a goodwill ambassador, send Hillary to England as Ambassador to the Court of St James, Secretary of State ... but she can't be VP, and Bill needs to be sent away to get his face off the front page.

It's more likely that no promise was made, just a gesture (when they met privately at Feinstein's home), and Hillary recognized the reality and got on board.

The End of the Line for the Lady from Arkansas, not that she was a lady, but it is the end of the line. So when she says - work as hard for Obama as you have for her, do you think she really means it? More importantly - those who betrayed her or failed to live up to promises - look over your shoulder!!

She will have a fight for her NY seat next time, unlike any fight thus far, and she won't be invoking Robert Kennedy.
