Canada - Can You?

National Post, Saturday, June 7, 2008

FRONT PAGE

Canada asks: Can the United States be color blind?

Canada, I have three questions for you.

1) Can Canada elect a Prime Minister that does not speak French, and or is not from Quebec?
(don't tell me how French is your second national language therefore this point is mute because they must be able to speak ... THAT is my point, not whether you have two languages, with one actually more superior to the other based upon funding allotments, and laws protecting. I do not need any lecture about the historicity of French as a language. I am also not interested in finding Abbott or Mackenzie or Macdonald to satisfy this requirement - how about in the last forty-five years, the period when everything changed.)

2) Can Canada elect a woman Prime Minister?
(ELECTED not appointed. Kim Campbell was appointed Prime Minister AFTER Mulroney decided to retire rather than force the Conservative party into a defeat in the next election - and it was a slaughter the next election anyway. She was a caretaker Prime Minister and served about four months. She was NOT elected in the next election, and in fact was fired by constituents from her district. I say fired, because they didn't re-elect her - quite severely so. )

3) Can Canada elect a black man as Prime Minister?

.

When you answer YES to those three, we would have already elected a black man, for his second term.

Until then, stop with your condescension, you are terribly under qualified. The answer to these questions is - you are not as liberal and open a society as you might otherwise think. And when puzzled about the mantle you so proudly carry proclaiming the very openness and tolerance you do not believe the US possesses with all its rules and stuffiness, yet cannot reconcile why you haven't had the black or woman or non-frenchie ... that is a problem. A personal one. The answer is simple - if you want to find a society that is still deeply prejudiced against the 'other' - look in the mirror.
