Obama backs away from McCain's debate challenge

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic candidate Barack Obama on Saturday backed away from rival John McCain's challenge for a series of joint appearances, agreeing only to the standard three debates in the fall.
In May, when a McCain adviser proposed a series of pre-convention appearances at town hall meetings, Obama said, "I think that's a great idea." In summer stumping on the campaign trail, McCain has often noted that Obama had not followed through and joined him in any events.

I think the reason is obvious.
He has a great deal to lose.
Obama speaks well when he has rehearsed his speech. He speaks well from behind a lectern. He speaks well with a teleprompter. He does not speak well the rest of the time, and he knows it.
The complaint that Reagan was a stuffed suit, he could only speak well with the tele-prompter ... well, now you have a guy 1/2 his age who needs the tele-prompter or he wanders and meanders, stutters and makes little sense.
Don't want that person to interact with someone who has years of experience in the Senate speaking.
