Islamic graffiti charge dropped

PROSECUTORS were under fire last night for deciding vile Islamic terror graffiti on a war memorial was NOT racially motivated.

Tohseef Shah, 21, was charged only with criminal damage - and let off with a fine after spraying "Islam will dominate the world - Osama is on his way".

The Crown Prosecution Service ruled the attack in Burton upon Trent, Staffs, was not religious or racist - which could have led to more serious charges. But Tory MP and ex-Army colonel Patrick Mercer said: "This is a gross disrespect of our war dead. I hope the next Conservative government will introduce serious punishments."


Roy Whenman, of the local Royal British Legion, said the desecration of the memorial outside Burton College "dishonours those who gave their lives for our country".

Shah admitted the damage charge at the local magistrates court. His lawyer Mumtaz Chaudry told JPs: "This is nothing to do with his religious beliefs."

Shah, of Horninglow, was told to pay £500 to the council plus £85 costs. The CPS insisted yesterday: "No racial or religious group can be shown to have been targeted."
